[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] Samsung SDI has established research centers in the United States and Europe one after another to strengthen its global research and development (R&D) capabilities.
Samsung SDI announced on the 16th that it established 'SDI R&D America (hereinafter SDIRA)' in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, on the 15th (Korean time). SDIRA is Samsung SDI's first research center in the United States. On the 1st of last month, it also established 'SDI R&D Europe (hereinafter SDIRE)' in Munich, Germany. Next year, it plans to establish a research center in China.
Samsung SDI is establishing overseas research centers to secure a super-gap technological competitiveness advantage through regionally specialized battery new technology research and development.
SDIRA plans to collaborate with excellent universities and startups that are active in lithium-ion battery innovation technology and next-generation battery research and development. SDIRE will carry out R&D projects with excellent universities and research institutions that have strengths in battery process and equipment research and development. Through this, it is expected to secure outstanding overseas talent and build research and development infrastructure.
Samsung SDI also plans to expand its global R&D capabilities by establishing a research center in China next year, which has the largest number of battery-related universities, research institutions, and companies.
Samsung SDI is investing at the industry's highest level in research and development expenses and focusing on developing next-generation battery technology, which is a future growth engine. According to Samsung SDI's business report disclosed in March this year, last year's R&D expenses reached 877.6 billion KRW, the highest ever.
In July, Samsung SDI held the 'Tech & Career Forum' targeting domestic PhD-level personnel, with key executives from the development sector including President and CEO Choi Yunho and SDI Research Center Head (Vice President) Jang Hyuk. They made every effort to secure and nurture excellent future talent to become a global top-tier company by 2030.
President Choi said, "The establishment of overseas research centers such as SDIRA and SDIRE is to secure super-gap technological competitiveness and further enhance the best quality by utilizing global new technologies and outstanding overseas talent," adding, "We plan to continuously expand regional R&D bases starting with the United States and Europe."
