[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea's presidential candidate, confirmed overwhelming support exceeding the majority in the Chungcheong region's party member vote on the 14th. In the national public opinion poll, Candidate Lee also secured a vote share close to 80%, confirming his lead.
On the afternoon of the 14th, after concluding a joint speech meeting for Daejeon and Sejong at Hanbat Sports Complex in Daejeon, Candidate Lee received a cumulative 73.28% of the votes. Candidate Park Yong-jin received 19.90%, and Candidate Kang Hoon-sik received 6.83%. This result adds the Chungcheong region's party member vote to previous votes from Gangwon, Daegu, Gyeongbuk, Jeju, Incheon, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.
However, voter turnout was notably low. Turnout rates were 31.87% in Chungnam, 34.39% in Chungbuk, 45.05% in Sejong, and 33.61% in Daejeon.
Before announcing the voting results that day, joint speech meetings were held at the Transportation Training Center in Gongju, Chungnam, CJB Media Center in Cheongju, Chungbuk, and Hanbat Sports Complex in Daejeon. At this event, Candidate Lee appealed, saying, "I need an opportunity to work, not party leadership," and "Please entrust me with the responsibility and role to create a Democratic Party for the people, not for power."
Candidate Park did not directly mention Candidate Lee but criticized the self-nomination in Gyeyang-eul and the controversy over the revision of Article 80 of the party constitution. He said, "When changing the party constitution and platform, let's create a democratic Democratic Party that undergoes deliberation and discussion," and "The party leader self-nominated in a safe district where he has never lost in the past 20 years instead of a difficult district, resulting in the defeat of our capable comrades one after another."
Candidate Kang said, "Lee Jae-myung, who has become the target of prosecution, I will be not a shield but a spear. Park Yong-jin, who has lived like a loner, we must broaden his path so he is not marginalized," adding, "A broader Democratic Party, a stronger Democratic Party?that is our hope and the politics we learned to build in Chungcheong. Let the Democratic Party change and advance to change Chungcheong's fate, build a greater Democratic Party, and finally achieve victory in the general election in two years, the local elections in four years, and ultimately the presidential election together."
In the first national public opinion poll released together, Candidate Lee received 79.69% of the votes. Candidate Park received 16.96%, and Candidate Kang received 3.35%.
In the Supreme Council member primary, Candidate Jeong Cheong-rae ranked first with 28.22% in the party member vote. He was followed by Candidate Ko Min-jung (22.11%), Candidate Jang Kyung-tae (11.48%), Candidate Seo Young-kyo (11.06%), Candidate Park Chan-dae (10.68%), Candidate Yoon Young-chan (7.73%), Candidate Go Young-in (4.57%), and Candidate Song Gap-seok (4.15%). In the first national public opinion poll, the order was Jeong Cheong-rae (30.61%), Ko Min-jung (21.57%), Jang Kyung-tae (12.61%), Seo Young-kyo (11.78%), Park Chan-dae (9.50%), Yoon Young-chan (6.25%), Song Gap-seok (5.41%), and Go Young-in (2.27%).
In the Supreme Council member election, candidates close to party leadership candidate Lee Jae-myung, such as Jeong Cheong-rae, Jang Kyung-tae, Seo Young-kyo, and Park Chan-dae, are leading. Among candidates who do not claim to be pro-Lee, Ko Min-jung is the only one in the top five.
The Democratic Party reflects 30% delegates, 40% party members, 5% general party member opinion polls, and 25% general public opinion polls in the party leader primary.
