“Trusted him”…What punishment was given to the man in his 60s who stole tens of millions from elderly disabled persons?

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] A woman in her 60s was sentenced to prison for allegedly discovering the card storage location of a disabled victim she knew and embezzling tens of millions of won.

On the 15th, Judge Park Miseon of Criminal Division 9 at the Seoul Western District Court announced that on the 10th, she sentenced A (66), who was indicted on charges of fraud, theft, and violation of the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act, to 10 months in prison.

A is accused of using the credit card of B, whom she knew, to embezzle approximately 60 million won in a total of 122 transactions over four months.

According to the prosecution, around June 2019, A met B, who was working in parking management in Seodaemun-gu, through an acquaintance and became close from that time. B, who is visually impaired at level 5 and elderly with limited mobility, kept her credit card on the security office desk located in the parking lot.

On December 5 of the same year, A learned the PIN while withdrawing cash from B’s credit card at B’s request, and starting from December 17, she began withdrawing 200,000 won in cash from B’s card, eventually embezzling 58.79 million won by early March 2020.

Additionally, around May 2020, A took advantage of B’s lack of supervision to steal another credit card and used it to pay taxi fares totaling 383,500 won in 56 transactions over two weeks.

Judge Park pointed out, “A committed repeated theft and fraud over a considerable period, resulting in a total damage exceeding 59 million won,” and added, “Since most of the damages have not been recovered, appropriate punishment is necessary.”

However, Judge Park explained the sentencing by stating, “A admitted to the crimes and has no prior criminal record,” and “Considering that A repaid 7 million won, a portion of the damages to B, and agreed to repay 13 million won in installments over 26 months.”
