COVID-19 New Cases 119,603... 512 Critical Patients, Highest in 107 Days


[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] As the COVID-19 resurgence continues, nearly 120,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported on the 14th. The increase in the number of critically ill patients, which appears with a 1-2 week lag after the rise in confirmed cases, was also notable.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on this day, 111,603 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the cumulative total to 21,355,958.


The number of confirmed cases on this day decreased by 4,989 compared to the previous day (124,592 cases).


This is 1.13 times the number reported a week ago on the 7th (105,507 cases) and 1.63 times the number reported two weeks ago on the 31st of last month (73,589 cases).


From the 8th to this day, the daily new confirmed cases over the past week were 55,262 → 149,866 → 151,748 → 137,204 → 128,714 → 124,592 → 119,603, averaging 123,856 cases per day.


The number of critically ill patients was 512, an increase of 43 from the previous day (469). This is the highest level in 107 days since April 29 (526 cases).


Among the critically ill patients, 450 (87.9%) are aged 60 or older.


The number of deaths reported the previous day was 57, which is 10 fewer than the day before (67).


Among the deceased, 37 (64.9%) were aged 80 or older, 10 were in their 70s, 5 in their 60s, 4 in their 50s, and 1 in their 40s.


The cumulative number of deaths is 25,623, with a cumulative COVID-19 fatality rate of 0.12%.


The occupancy rate of critically ill patient beds nationwide was 42.5% (761 out of 1,790 beds in use), down 0.5 percentage points (P) from the previous day (43.0%).


The occupancy rate of semi-critical patient beds was 62.1%, up 1.7%P from the previous day (60.4%), and the occupancy rate of semi-mild patient beds was 45.5%, up 1.2%P from the previous day (44.3%).


As of midnight on this day, 748,338 confirmed patients were under home treatment, an increase of 31,241 from the previous day (717,097).


As of 5 p.m. the previous day, there were 13,733 respiratory patient treatment centers nationwide, of which 9,926 one-stop treatment institutions that provide diagnosis, testing, prescription, and treatment for respiratory patients were operating.


Meanwhile, among the new confirmed cases, 460 were imported cases, 20 fewer than the previous day (480). Imported cases have maintained a high level, exceeding the mid-400s daily since the beginning of this month.


Excluding imported cases, domestic regional infections numbered 119,143.
