[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Regarding the stabbing incident involving Salman Rushdie, the British author famous for the novel "The Satanic Verses," U.S. President Joe Biden reiterated the importance of freedom of expression and American values on the 13th (local time).
According to CNN and other outlets, President Biden stated in a press release that day, "I am shocked and saddened by the vicious attack on author Rushdie," and added, "I join people around the world and Americans in praying for his health and recovery." He mentioned that Rushdie, who has provided insight into human society, possesses an unparalleled sense of storytelling, and has consistently rejected fear and silence, symbolizes essential and universal ideals.
He also referred to truth, courage, vitality, resilience, and the ability to share ideas without fear, saying, "These are fundamental components of a free and open society." He continued, "We stand in solidarity with author Rushdie and all those who support freedom of expression, reaffirming our commitment to American values."
Earlier, the day before, Rushdie suffered serious injuries after being stabbed in the neck and abdomen with a sharp weapon during a lecture event in Chautauqua, New York. He underwent emergency surgery but is still on a ventilator, with reports indicating he may lose sight in one eye, and that his arm nerves were severed and his liver damaged.
The attacker, Hadi Matar, was charged that day with attempted second-degree murder and assault. Prosecutors claim he planned the attack on Rushdie in advance. Meanwhile, Matar has pleaded not guilty through his attorney.
