US Investigates Safety Belt Component Defects in Some Hyundai and Kia Vehicles

[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating defects in the seatbelt pretensioners installed in some Hyundai and Kia vehicles, AP News reported on the 12th (local time).

The seatbelt pretensioner is a component that tightens the seatbelt toward the occupant's body upon detecting a collision, helping to prevent injuries.

The NHTSA Defect Investigation Office is examining whether the seatbelt pretensioners in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles from 2020 to 2022 pose a risk of rupturing or breaking when suddenly activated.

The investigation includes the 2021 Elantra, 2021 Genesis GV80, 2020-2021 Accent, and 2022 Sorento Hybrid models. The office stated that it may expand the scope of the investigation if necessary.
