[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] As the COVID-19 resurgence continues, nearly 120,000 new confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 9 PM on the 12th.

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 PM on the same day, 119,072 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is 5,785 fewer than the previous day's count at the same time (124,857).

Typically, due to a decrease in diagnostic testing over the weekend, confirmed cases tend to increase midweek and decrease towards the end of the week and weekends.

As of 9 PM on this day, the number of confirmed cases is 1.1 times that of a week ago on the 5th (107,807 cases) and 1.5 times that of two weeks ago on the 29th of last month (78,743 cases).

Compared to the 'doubling' phenomenon where cases nearly doubled within a week at the end of last month, the increase in confirmed cases has clearly slowed. However, some analyses suggest that the decrease in testing due to the vacation season and heavy rains may have contributed to the decline in confirmed cases.

Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced on the 13th is expected to increase further, reaching the 120,000 range.

As of 9 PM on this day, confirmed cases were 59,090 in the metropolitan area and 59,982 in non-metropolitan areas, accounting for 49.6% and 50.4% respectively, showing a similar distribution.

By region, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 31,004, Seoul 21,870, Gyeongnam 7,764, Gyeongbuk 6,216, Incheon 6,063, Daegu 5,752, Jeonnam 5,392, Jeonbuk 4,817, Chungnam 4,535, Gwangju 4,390, Chungbuk 4,176, Gangwon 3,987, Daejeon 3,902, Busan 3,307, Ulsan 2,964, Jeju 1,869, and Sejong 1,064.
