[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Geomdan Prehistoric Museum in Incheon will hold the 2022 special exhibition "A New City Awakening from Excavation 3,000 Years Ago - The Story of Geomdan New City Excavation" from the 17th to December 31st.
This exhibition was prepared to introduce to citizens the contents and achievements of the excavation surveys conducted from 2014 to 2020 during the development process of Geomdan New City, the largest land development project in Korea.
Large-scale land development causes changes to the natural terrain and damage to relics that have continued for a long time, so it is necessary to record the historical appearance before these traces disappear. Excavation surveys are one of the most important methods for this purpose.
The cultural heritage excavation survey results in the Geomdan New City area confirmed about 3,000 relic sites and about 7,500 artifacts. In particular, it was revealed that during the Bronze Age, the Geomdan area formed the largest settlement in the midwestern part of Korea, and through this exhibition, the historicity of Geomdan New City development is interpreted as the rebirth of a large-scale Bronze Age settlement.
The special exhibition is divided into three parts: Part 1 "Finding the Memory of Soil," Part 2 "Reviving the Memory of Soil," and Part 3 "Enjoying the Memory of Soil." Through the excavated relic sites and artifacts, visitors can glimpse the political and social conditions and lifestyle culture of our ancestors from several thousand years ago to several hundred years ago.
The visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (closed every Monday), and admission is free.
Meanwhile, the artifacts excavated from the Geomdan area are currently stored in the storage of the Geomdan Prehistoric Museum. These artifacts are scheduled to be exhibited at the Geomdan New City Museum (tentative name), which will newly open in 2026 at Neighborhood Park No. 14 in Bullo-dong, Seo-gu.
