Two Students from Gwangju Daedong High School Involved in Exam Paper Leak Sent to Prosecution

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Two students from Gwangju Daedong High School who secretly entered the teachers' office and leaked exam papers have been handed over to the prosecution.

On the 12th, the Gwangju Western Police Station announced that they had sent the two students to the prosecution on charges of obstruction of business and violation of the Information and Communications Network Act.

The two students are accused of breaking into the teachers' office 13 to 14 times between March and July, stealing midterm exam papers (7 subjects) and final exam papers (9 subjects) for the first semester of the second grade.

They took advantage of late-night hours when only the security guard was present, climbed through windows, and entered the teachers' office via the outer wall, implanting malware on teachers' laptops that automatically captured computer screens.

It was investigated that student A, who is proficient with computers, obtained the malware from the internet and performed additional coding to enhance its functionality.

However, since the malware was unstable, their original plan to remotely extract the captured files failed, so they used a method of directly plugging in a portable storage device (USB) to copy the related files.

During the police investigation, they reportedly stated that they committed the crime because they wanted to enter a good university.

The case came to light after a classmate reported to the school that they had taken the exams dishonestly between the 11th and 13th of last month.

A police official explained, "Thanks to the school's active cooperation and collaboration with related organizations, we were able to uncover the full extent of the crime."

He added, "We plan to notify the education authorities of the relevant details so that institutional measures can be established to prevent recurrence in the future."
