On the 10th, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology held the '2022 London Protocol Graduate Degree Conferment Ceremony'.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) held the '2022 London Protocol Graduate Degree Conferment Ceremony' at the KIOST headquarters on the 10th.
At this year's third ceremony, three individuals from three countries received degrees. The degree recipients are Dashbalbar Oyungerel (Ministry of Transport, Mongolia), Jonathan Ahorlu Fafa (University of Ghana Marine), and Htun Lin Hlaing (Myanmar Port Authority).
In September 2016, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries proposed hosting the London Protocol Graduate School at KIOST during the 'London Convention and Protocol Contracting Parties Meeting' to strengthen the scientific and technological expertise of the London Protocol through technical cooperation and to enhance South Korea's status within the London Protocol.
KIOST established a foreign professional master's program in 'London Protocol Management Engineering' at the University of Science and Technology (UST) and has been operating the degree program since the fall semester of 2018 for public officials from developing countries. To date, seven graduates from four countries (Philippines, Myanmar, Peru, Jamaica) have been produced.
KIOST President Kim Woong-seo stated, "Graduates from the London Protocol Management Engineering master's program are expected to actively respond to marine environmental issues in their home countries and serve as a bridge to strengthen cooperation between South Korea and other countries in the marine environment sector."
Shin Jae-young, Director of Marine Conservation at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "The London Protocol is a resolution adopted to conserve and protect the marine environment from all sources of pollution. As the importance of the marine environment grows in the international community, we hope that the human resources from various countries who have completed the London Protocol master's program will play a significant role in solving global environmental issues."
