Strengthening Forest Carbon Absorption Capacity through Creation of 1-Degree 1-Theme Gardens
[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, is continuously strengthening the carbon absorption capacity of forests as a measure to overcome the climate crisis.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) declared that the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions is the main cause of global warming.
In addition, the Ministry of Environment and other related ministries are promoting the ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality Declaration’ and the ‘2050 Scenario Establishment’ to minimize domestic damage caused by climate change and actively participate in responding to the climate crisis.
Accordingly, Sinan-gun is becoming a center for practicing carbon neutrality by creating new absorption sources such as fine dust blocking forests, 10-ri Road of Zelkova trees, living area forests, and ecological restoration forests.
In particular, compared to the project budget, Sinan-gun planted trees on an area three to four times larger than other local governments, achieving maximum results and winning the Forest Service and Jeollanam-do Green City Excellence Award for two consecutive years.
Last year, they identified nationwide tree resources suitable for the local climate and growth environment and planted a large number of trees at the appropriate time using donated trees with landscaping value.
Furthermore, to create a “1 Island 1 Theme Garden” that blooms flowers all year round, they established a system to significantly reduce costs by contracting with flower and tree nurseries for contract cultivation, thereby saving the budget.
After planting, they not only perform post-management such as watering, fertilizing, and weeding but also install windbreaks to prevent damage from sea winds and salt, becoming a model that attracts numerous field visits and inquiries from other local governments.
A Sinan-gun official stated, “Sinan-gun will actively participate in responding to the climate crisis by creating unique forests that expand carbon absorption sources for protecting the marine ecosystem as well as creating urban forests for carbon neutrality offset, and will strive to enhance the economic and ecological value of forests.”
