Taiwan Has Been Chinese Territory Since Ancient Times... Proposes One Country, Two Systems as Unification Method
Chinese Authorities Intensify Offensive Against Taiwan Following Pelosi's Visit
[Asia Economy Senior Reporter Cho Young-shin] Chinese authorities have published a Taiwan white paper, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 10th.
The white paper titled "The Taiwan Issue and China's Reunification in the New Era" was jointly published by the State Council of China and the Taiwan Affairs Office, Xinhua reported.
It reiterated that Taiwan is part of China and stated that the white paper contains the firm will and determination of the Chinese Communist Party and the 1.4 billion Chinese people for national reunification, Xinhua added.
Through the white paper, Chinese authorities claimed that Taiwan has been Chinese territory since ancient times and is legally part of China according to United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution 2758.
It also emphasized that "One China" is internationally recognized and indisputable Chinese territory. Furthermore, it reiterated that Taiwan has never been a country and that it remains an inseparable part of China.
The white paper also pointed out that there are fundamental differences in social systems and ideologies (democracy) between mainland China and Taiwan, and proposed that these issues can be resolved through the "One Country, Two Systems" approach as a method of reunification.
However, while stating in the white paper that the mainland will not target Taiwanese compatriots for reunification, it included language that non-peaceful means would be used as a last resort.
In conclusion, the white paper said Taiwan's future depends on national reunification and called for uniting Taiwanese compatriots to jointly achieve the glorious cause of national reunification and national rejuvenation.
The white paper was released amid large-scale military exercises following U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. The Chinese military has been conducting military drills near the Taiwan Strait daily, threatening the U.S. and Taiwan.
