[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] The specialized 5G network, I-eum 5G, will be applied to medical services. Intelligent medical services such as augmented reality (AR) surgical guides and real-time remote consultations are expected to be activated.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 10th that it has completed the frequency allocation for I-eum 5G and the registration change for the telecommunications business requested by Nable Communications.

I-eum 5G is a 5G communication network that allows businesses wishing to provide 5G convergence services within specific areas (land or buildings) to build and operate using 5G frequencies.

Among the projects selected in June for the '5G Convergence Service Project' utilizing I-eum 5G, Nable Communications is the first to apply for frequency allocation and telecommunications business registration.

Nable Communications’ I-eum 5G will support AR surgical guide services based on 3D modeling of patient examination results such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and provide intelligent medical services including real-time remote consultations between operating rooms and doctors.

For example, the patient’s CT and MRI results are 3D modeled and aligned in real-time with AR on the surgical site using artificial intelligence (AI), enabling doctors to provide precise surgical services in an easy-to-understand manner. Utilizing 5G’s ultra-high speed and low latency, it is possible to connect the operating room via tablets and multi-screens for real-time consultations.

The frequency band applied for is a 100 MHz bandwidth in the 4.7 GHz band. The Ministry of Science and ICT allocated the entire requested 4.7 GHz band to ensure smooth service provision planned by Nable Communications.

The application area is Ewha Mokdong Hospital located in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, and the frequency can be used for three years starting from September 1. The allocation fee is approximately 3.08 million KRW.

Nable Communications plans to expand the introduction of I-eum 5G to intelligent medical services across various surgical fields, leveraging this frequency allocation.

The Ministry of Science and ICT reviewed the appropriateness of the user protection plan submitted by Nable Communications and imposed the minimum necessary user protection measures, processing the registration change for the telecommunications business holding the line facilities to provide I-eum 5G services.

Park Yoon-kyu, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "This year, we plan to actively discover and expand convergence services centered on I-eum 5G in various industries that can maximize the advantages of 5G." He added, "In the case of Nable Communications, digital transformation technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) have blossomed into intelligent medical services through I-eum 5G, and based on this, we expect it to be applied to broader medical services, promoting a digital transformation."
