[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] It has been revealed that Apple's artificial intelligence (AI) software 'Siri' introduces Korea as "the Japanese Empire territory of Joseon on the Korean Peninsula or the Joseon Peninsula."
On the 9th, the private cyber diplomatic corps VANK announced that when Siri is activated on an iPhone and asked "Tell me about Korea," it provides an answer containing a critical error.
According to VANK, when asked this question, Siri explains, "Korea is a region located in East Asia or a constitutional state, and in modern history, it refers to the Japanese Empire territory of Joseon on the Korean Peninsula or the Joseon Peninsula," adding, "In modern and contemporary history, Korea was used to refer to the Daehan Empire established by Emperor Gojong."
VANK criticized, "Since modern Korean history is marked from August 15, 1945, this explanation by Siri wrongly introduces Korea as if it were still the Japanese Empire territory of Joseon even after liberation."
VANK also pointed out that the source of Siri's answer is unclear. Siri indicates the source of this answer as 'Wikipedia,' but the actual Wikipedia introduces Korea as "a region located on the Korean Peninsula in East Asia or a constitutional state, and today refers to both the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on the Korean Peninsula or the Joseon Peninsula." It further explains, "In modern times, 'Korea' generally refers to the Republic of Korea, and 'Joseon' often refers to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; in modern and contemporary history, Korea was also used to refer to the Daehan Empire established by Emperor Gojong."
VANK emphasized, "It is a serious problem that a global company like Apple disseminates incorrect information worldwide through Siri without proper source verification," and stressed, "The content introducing Korea on Siri must be corrected." VANK has sent a letter of protest requesting correction to Apple and urged netizens to participate in the correction campaign.
