[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City will conduct a comprehensive crackdown on local tax arrears from this month until November.
The city announced on the 10th that during the crackdown period, it will investigate hidden assets of high-value and chronic tax delinquents, and make every effort to collect arrears through administrative sanctions such as seizure and auction of assets including real estate, deposits, and salaries, as well as restrictions on licensed businesses.
In particular, to collect overdue automobile taxes, the city plans to expand the regular license plate confiscation activities, which have been conducted during daytime hours, into nighttime hours, and operate a monthly "Joint Confiscation Day" to seize not only local tax delinquent vehicles but also vehicles with unpaid fines throughout the entire jurisdiction.
Delinquent taxes can be paid in cash or by credit card at bank ATMs nationwide without a tax bill.
Taxpayers can check their virtual account for payment or use the automatic response system (ARS) local tax payment service to pay by credit card.
The city will support economic recovery by granting collection deferrals, installment payments, and confiscation postponements for tax delinquents affected directly or indirectly by COVID-19, including livelihood-type taxpayers, small businesses, and micro-enterprises.
Hwang Yong-yeon, head of the city's Tax Management Division, said, "Since vehicle operation is restricted when automobile license plates are confiscated, we ask taxpayers to check and pay their arrears before experiencing inconvenience," and added, "The city will do its best to create a sound tax payment culture and secure independent revenue sources through this comprehensive tax arrears crackdown."
