Request for Detention on This Day
[Asia Economy reporters Jang Sehee and Oh Gyumin] Lawyer Jang Youngha, who raised allegations of Lee Jae-myung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, being involved with gangsters by releasing fake evidence photos, has been arrested by the police.
On the 9th, the Anti-Corruption and Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency arrested Lawyer Jang the previous day on charges of false information disclosure under the Public Official Election Act. Lawyer Jang claimed that after meeting Park Cheolmin, a gangster who was detained in October last year, he had secured a photo of a stack of money that was delivered to Lee Jae-myung, then mayor of Seongnam, in 2015.
However, it was revealed that the photo was of a stack of money that Park boasted about to those around him, claiming it was money he earned from his rental car business in 2018. The Democratic Party of Korea filed a complaint with the prosecution against Park and Lawyer Jang for violating the Public Official Election Act and other charges. The police, who received the case from the prosecution, began their investigation by searching the Suwon Detention Center where Park was imprisoned in March, followed by a search of Lawyer Jang’s office last month.
After consecutively searching the Suwon Detention Center where Park was held and Lawyer Jang’s office and analyzing related materials, the police concluded that Lawyer Jang knowingly disclosed false information regarding the allegations of receiving stacks of money and arrested him.
Meanwhile, there are plans to apply for an arrest warrant as early as today.
