Yeosu-si Samsan-myeon Geomundo Area Selected for Cultural Heritage Administration Public Project
Creating New Urban Brand for Underdeveloped and Disappearing Areas... Expected Economic Revitalization
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 9th that the Geomundo area in Samsan-myeon, Yeosu City was the only site nationwide to be finally selected as a project target in the Cultural Heritage Administration’s ‘2022 Modern Historical and Cultural Space Revitalization Contest.’
The Modern Historical and Cultural Space Revitalization Project is aimed at actively preserving cultural heritage and spaces with high historical value from the modern and contemporary periods and utilizing them to revitalize regional regeneration.
Since March, the Cultural Heritage Administration conducted a contest targeting local governments nationwide that possess streets and village districts formed during the modern and contemporary periods with a history of over 50 years.
Among a total of nine participating cities and counties, after processes including document screening, on-site investigation, and comprehensive evaluation, Yeosu City’s ‘Geomundo Modern Historical and Cultural Space Project’ received the highest score and was confirmed as the winner.
Through this contest, Geomundo was recognized for its value in terms of the concentration, authenticity, historicity, and sense of place of modern cultural heritage located on the island.
In particular, the preservation of cultural heritage related to the introduction of modern artifacts such as the Geomundo Incident, the architectural historical value of the modern residential street centered around the inner harbor, and the concentrated preservation of modern heritage in island areas such as the assembly hall building were evaluated as having high preservation and utilization value.
The Geomundo Modern Historical and Cultural Space Project will be promoted over five years starting in 2024, with a total project cost of 36 billion KRW invested in the Samsan-myeon area of Yeosu.
The project will mainly include preservation-based initiatives such as academic research surveys, creation of historical cultural spaces, repair and restoration of registered cultural properties, and restoration of historical landscapes, as well as utilization-based initiatives such as the creation and operation of educational, exhibition, and experiential spaces, development of operational content, and expansion of convenience facilities.
Kim Youngshin, Director of Tourism, Culture, and Sports Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “By utilizing modern cultural heritage to unite local residents and regional culture, a new urban brand will be created in the increasingly declining and disappearing island areas, leading to regional economic revitalization effects.”
