Kim Byeongnae, Mayor of Gwangju Nam-gu, Calls Emergency Meeting: "No Exceptions for Disasters"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Kim Byeong-nae, Mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, held an emergency disaster countermeasure meeting on the morning of the 9th and gave special instructions to make thorough efforts to prevent damage caused by heavy rain.

At 10 a.m. that day, Mayor Kim convened senior officials and held an "Emergency Disaster Countermeasure Meeting" in the situation room on the 7th floor of the district office.

This was to discuss preventive measures in advance, keeping open the possibility that unexpected incidents could occur in the southern region as well, following the heavy rain that caused large-scale casualties and property damage in the metropolitan area and central regions the previous day.

Considering that the areas where multiple damages occur whenever heavy rain falls are low-lying areas, Mayor Kim instructed to place sandbags that can be used effectively or to change the flow of water in emergency situations at various locations.

Previously, Nam-gu had placed about 5,500 sandbags at 45 locations within the district by the end of June in preparation for the rainy season, and with this additional instruction, they plan to do their best to prevent damage from flooding by placing additional sandbags at the entrances of underground parking lots of apartments and buildings located in low-lying areas within the district.

Along with this, since June, special inspections have been continuously maintained on stormwater drainage pipes, which play an important role in managing the flow velocity of rainwater, and re-inspections will be conducted to remove foreign substances around the pipes and to ensure that rubber mat covers do not cover the stormwater drainage pipes, preventing flooding damage.

Mayor Kim said, "Natural disaster damage can occur anywhere in the country at any time without exception, so thorough preparation is the best preventive measure," and added, "I hope everyone will do their best to serve to prevent damage to the precious lives and property of residents."
