If Your Electric Vehicle Is Flooded, Turn Off the Engine and Evacuate Quickly

Guidelines for Actions During Vehicle Flooding

As flooding damage to cars spreads due to heavy rain in the central region, authorities have urged special caution regarding electric vehicles.

On the 9th, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority stated, "By paying special attention when using electric vehicles during rainy weather, safety accidents can be sufficiently prevented," adding, "Avoid using chargers with wet hands when charging electric vehicles, and be cautious of moisture entering the charging device during rain."

They also added that it is advisable to avoid using chargers during severe storms, thunder, and lightning, and to ensure that the charger connector is not pointed upwards.

Even if the vehicle is submerged, the high-voltage battery is insulated from the vehicle body, so contact with the vehicle does not cause electric shock. However, the authority recommends, "For safety, turn off the engine as quickly as possible and evacuate the vehicle promptly."

Furthermore, after draining water from a submerged electric vehicle, to ensure safety, be careful not to directly touch the electric vehicle’s high-voltage cables (orange), connectors, and high-power battery. In such cases, it is best to contact emergency services such as the fire station or the service center of the respective manufacturer for assistance.
