[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The National Folk Museum has published a research report titled "Weaving and Containing: Korean Daily Life Culture Seen Through Baskets," focusing on baskets, which were Korea's representative household items before the advent of plastic baskets. The report offers a comprehensive perspective on the cultural context surrounding baskets, covering their history, changes in meaning, production process, and uses.
Baskets are traditional containers woven from straw, grass, wood, and other materials, made to store and carry items. Since the shape and size can be determined according to the maker's intention after selecting materials in daily life, baskets provide meaningful insights into climate, geographical environment, people's lifestyles, and customs.
The research report compiles the entire basket-making process?from harvesting representative basket materials such as rice straw, Danggengi vines, sedge, bamboo, willow, and wild broom?into one volume, which had previously been recorded only fragmentarily in existing materials.
