Thorough Quarantine Measures Needed to Prevent Larvae Habitation and Growth
[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cha Jong-seon] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Lee Sang-cheol) announced that it is conducting mosquito larva control projects and intensive summer disinfection to prevent the occurrence of infectious disease vector larvae such as mosquitoes and flies.
Mosquitoes and flies act as vectors for summer infectious diseases such as the Zika virus and malaria. Therefore, thorough disinfection to prevent the habitat and growth of larvae is important.
In the larva survey conducted this year in Gokseong-gun, mosquito larvae were found in a total of 15 out of 161 larva habitats (3 in Gokseong-eup, 2 in Ogok-myeon, 1 in Moksadong-myeon, 1 in Seokgok-myeon, 1 in Okwa-myeon, 3 in Samgi-myeon, 1 in Ip-myeon, and 3 in Osan-myeon).
Accordingly, from March to July, Gokseong-gun regularly applied eco-friendly larvicide disinfectants to 161 larva habitats across 11 eup and myeon in three rounds.
For more effective disinfection, the county plans to conduct one additional larva control to block mosquito occurrence and breeding.
According to research results, a single adult female mosquito is known to lay about 200 to 750 eggs in 4 to 5 batches (about 50 to 150 eggs per batch) during its lifetime.
Eliminating one mosquito larva has a similar effect to eradicating about 500 adult mosquitoes.
Most larvae inhabit puddles, large building basements, apartment basements, village hall septic tanks, water collection wells, bathhouse sewage systems, parks, forests, large waste disposal sites, discarded tire yards, vacant houses, and public restrooms.
Along with larva control, Gokseong-gun has organized a total of 12 disinfection teams across 11 eup and myeon and the Gokseong-gun Health and Medical Center to conduct intensive summer disinfection targeting adult mosquitoes.
From May to June, spraying and fogging disinfection are carried out once every two weeks, and from July to October, once a week in forests, parks, and tourist sites.
A representative of the Gokseong-gun Health and Medical Center said, “By conducting intensive disinfection in areas vulnerable to infectious disease outbreaks, we aim to protect residents’ health. Among these, larva control has the advantage of achieving fundamental control effects at much lower costs compared to fogging disinfection focused on adult mosquito control.”
