[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] The resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating again. The number of new confirmed cases reached nearly 150,000, 1.34 times higher than the previous week, and the number of critically ill patients increased by 40 compared to the previous day.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 9th, as of midnight, 149,897 new COVID-19 cases were added, bringing the total cumulative confirmed cases to 20,694,239. Among these, 588 cases were imported from overseas.
Today's new confirmed cases were the highest in 118 days since April 13 (195,387 cases). The number increased by 38,139 compared to a week ago, surpassing 120,000 and 130,000 cases at once for the first time during this resurgence. This is close to the median value of 150,000 cases, which the authorities had predicted as the peak within the range of 110,000 to 190,000 cases.
The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized increased by 40 from the previous day to 364. This is the highest number in 90 days since May 11 (383 patients) this year. Although the number of critically ill patients increased, the nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate slightly decreased to 38.5% compared to over 40% the previous day. The rate is 37.6% in the metropolitan area and 40.4% in non-metropolitan areas.
The number of new deaths was recorded at 40, an increase of 11 from the previous day. By age group, 25 were aged 80 or older, 8 in their 70s, 4 in their 60s, and one each in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. The cumulative death toll stands at 25,332, with a fatality rate of 0.12%.
The number of confirmed cases currently under home treatment increased by 135,659 from the previous day, totaling 595,491.
Meanwhile, 18 people received the 'Evusheld' treatment, which began yesterday. Evusheld is an antibody preparation directly injected into the body for severely immunocompromised individuals who do not form antibodies well even after vaccination.
