[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] BGF Retail announced on the 9th that it donated 15 million KRW to the Independence Cultural Heritage Preservation Fund in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the heroic act by independence activist Yun Bong-gil ahead of Liberation Day.

The donation will be used through the commemorative association for projects honoring Yun Bong-gil’s achievements and for education on the history of the independence movement. In April, CU launched a limited edition ready-to-eat meal series to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Yun Bong-gil’s heroic act, and ran the “Shanghai Heroic Act 90th Anniversary Support Campaign,” donating an amount equal to 1% of sales revenue through a matching grant.

The ready-to-eat meal series consisted of five items including lunch boxes using Korean beef bulgogi, triangular kimbap, kimbap, and hamburgers. The concept was inspired by the story that on the day of the heroic act, Kim Gu personally procured beef to prepare a meal for Yun Bong-gil. The product packaging was designed with a photo of Yun Bong-gil joining the Korean Patriotic Organization and phrases marking the 90th anniversary of the heroic act, and approximately one million units were sold over about three months.

BGF Retail CEO Lee Geon-jun said, “As Korea’s leading convenience store, CU has continuously carried out patriotic campaigns together with over 16,000 franchise stores and customers nationwide,” adding, “We will continue to make various efforts to build a proud Republic of Korea.”
