Dementia Overcoming Research and Development Project Group Launches Pilot Project for Standardization of Dementia Research Data

TRR-DPK Pilot Operation Begins

Dementia Overcoming Research and Development Project Group Launches Pilot Project for Standardization of Dementia Research Data

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] The Dementia Overcoming Research and Development Consortium (KDRC) announced on the 8th that it has established the country's first dementia-related standardized research data and information sharing platform, 'TRR-DPK,' which can be immediately utilized for the activation of domestic dementia research and the development of dementia diagnosis and treatment drugs, and will begin a pilot project from the 8th.

The platform established by the consortium this time refers to the 'TRR (Trial Ready Registry),' a prepared patient registry for dementia-related clinical trials, and the domestic dementia research information integration and linkage system, 'DPK (Dementia Platform Korea).'

Until now, domestic dementia research has faced many limitations due to scattered and non-standardized data and the absence of a sharing system. In particular, each institution has different processes for collecting dementia-related clinical data and samples, and there is a lack of linkage between research results, causing significant time and cost to select participants who meet clinical trial conditions. The lack of a repository and sharing system for dementia-related clinical, epidemiological information, and imaging data has also been pointed out as a factor hindering the activation of dementia research, as researchers have to secure human samples and data for dementia repeatedly.

To solve these problems, the consortium standardized dementia-related data and human samples through verified procedures to unify TRR and established DPK, a system that integrates and links dementia research information including TRR.

To build TRR, the consortium standardized Alzheimer’s-related data and secured samples and imaging data from about 1,000 individuals across 56 hospitals nationwide. They plan to expand the number of participants to about 10,000 by 2028.

Also, since they already have samples and data from 600 individuals with verified biomarkers and neuropsychological test results, they plan to quickly distribute these when needed to reduce time and cost. They aim to secure about 3,000 samples by 2028 as well.

DPK was established to secure the latest dementia research data and information integration infrastructure. Through the DPK system, users can interact and exchange information with others, and anyone interested in dementia information can use it.

Moon In-hee, head of the Dementia Overcoming Research and Development Consortium, said, “Through the establishment of TRR-DPK, dementia researchers will be able to freely secure standardized, high-quality human samples and clinical data, which is expected to contribute to the activation of dementia-related research in the future,” adding, "We will continue to make our best efforts to produce various research outcomes in the dementia field and take a step closer to early diagnosis and fundamental treatment development for dementia.”

Professor Park Gun-woo of the Department of Neurology at Korea University College of Medicine also expressed expectations, saying, "The establishment of the TRR-DPK system is expected to have a significant ripple effect on the dementia research community," and "If dementia-related data continue to be added and researchers can continuously utilize accumulated data through DPK, a revolutionary advancement in domestic dementia research will be possible.”

Detailed information about the TRR-DPK system, which opened for pilot operation from the 8th, can be found on the Dementia Overcoming Research and Development Consortium website. By registering on the DPK system website, users can access services such as applying for DPK system use and TRR samples.
