28 High Schools in Bu-Ul-Gyeong Region, Over 160 Students Targeted... Special Lectures and Experiments on Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry Topics
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] The College of Natural Sciences at UNIST will hold the '2022 UNIST Basic Science Camp' for high school students in the southeastern region from August 8 to 12 for five days on the UNIST campus.
About 160 students from 28 high schools, who applied in advance, will participate in lectures and experiments.
The lectures were prepared by professors from the Department of Physics, Department of Mathematical Sciences, and Department of Chemistry, all affiliated with the College of Natural Sciences at UNIST.
In the field of physics, topics such as quantum information, X-ray crystallography, and statistical physics will be covered. In mathematics, stories about chaos theory, fluid equations, and machine learning will be shared. Lastly, in chemistry, lectures will be given on hydrogen and the hydrogen economy, next-generation wearable devices, and chemical reactions in the human body.
In addition to lectures, basic science-related experiments are also arranged to help students directly engage in experiments, fostering curiosity and creativity in basic science.
Ryu Dongsu, Dean of the College of Natural Sciences at UNIST, said, "Basic science is a discipline that forms the foundation for human happiness and sustainable development," adding, "We hope this camp will be an opportunity for students interested in science to dream of becoming basic scientists."
The College of Natural Sciences at UNIST is preparing the 'Basic Science Concert' and the 'Invited Lecture Series (Basic Science What&Why?)' to increase the popularity and expand the base of basic science.
The invited lecture series will be conducted sequentially from September this year, focusing on the future of basic science.
This camp was planned to commemorate the '2022 UN International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development' and is operated with support from the Ministry of Education's '2022 UN International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development Global Launch Ceremony' and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity's Smart Mathematics and Science Lab Project.
