[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Incheon Police Agency has launched a '24-hour drunk driving special crackdown' system starting from the 8th, following a series of recent drunk driving traffic accidents.
During the morning rush hours (7 a.m. to 9 a.m.), the police will focus on areas densely populated with government offices, industrial complexes, and companies to crack down on 'hangover driving,' where drivers operate vehicles while still under the influence from the previous day's drinking.
After lunchtime (2 p.m. to 5 p.m.), enforcement will target indoor and outdoor sports facilities, restaurants, and recreational areas where 'drinking while driving' is a concern. During late-night hours (10 p.m. to 3 a.m.), drunk driving crackdowns will focus on entertainment districts, locations with frequent drunk driving accidents, and border areas such as Gimpo and Bucheon in Gyeonggi Province.
Additionally, three or more locations including highway entrances and exits, toll gates (TG), and interchanges (IC) will be selected for daily joint drunk driving crackdowns conducted with the road management authorities.
The police will minimize inconvenience to citizens by conducting enforcement in ways that do not disrupt traffic flow, changing locations every 30 minutes for mobile crackdowns. During 112 patrols, if vehicles suspected of drunk driving?such as those swerving or with headlights off?are spotted, inspections and crackdowns will be conducted.
In Incheon, on the morning of the 31st last month at around 8:40 a.m., a drunk driving vehicle caused an accident by crashing into seven vehicles waiting at a traffic signal on a road in Namdong-gu.
Earlier, on the 24th of last month at around 11:40 p.m., a drunk driving vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian who was jaywalking on a road in Seo-gu.
However, as of July this year, the number of drunk driving traffic accident fatalities in the Incheon area decreased by three (42.9%) from seven in the same period last year to four, and the number of drunk driving traffic accidents dropped by 55 cases (11.2%) from 489 to 434.
