[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Due to the resurgence of COVID-19, over 50,000 new confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 9 p.m. on Sunday, the 7th.
According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on this day, 53,477 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is 48,084 fewer than the previous day's count at the same time (101,561 cases).
Although the number of confirmed cases decreased compared to the previous day due to reduced testing over the weekend, it is 1.25 times higher than a week ago on the 31st of last month (42,883 cases) and 1.52 times higher than two weeks ago on the 24th of last month (35,107 cases). Additionally, based on the Sunday 9 p.m. interim tally, this is the highest record in 17 weeks since April 10 (89,496 cases). Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced on the 8th is expected to increase further, reaching the high 50,000s.
As of 9 p.m. on this day, new confirmed cases were 25,658 (48.0%) in the metropolitan area and 27,819 (52.0%) in non-metropolitan areas. By region, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 15,012, Seoul 7,868, Gyeongbuk 3,423, Gyeongnam 3,050, Incheon 2,778, Gangwon 2,509, Jeonbuk 2,233, Daegu 2,167, Jeonnam 2,045, Gwangju 1,980, Chungnam 1,950, Chungbuk 1,962, Daejeon 1,772, Ulsan 1,620, Busan 1,342, Jeju 1,237, and Sejong 529.
The number of new confirmed cases over the past week from the 1st to this day were 44,654 → 111,758 → 119,889 → 107,869 → 112,901 → 110,066 → 105,507, averaging 101,892 cases per day.
Health authorities have projected that the peak of this resurgence will be around 150,000 cases per day within this month, which is lower than initially expected. However, they also noted that due to factors such as waning immunity and the holiday season, the outbreak itself could last for an extended period.
