Changwon Mayor Hong Nampyo Requests National Funding for Emergency Water Pipeline Construction Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam, and Han Hwa-jin, Minister of Environment (right), visited Chilseo Water Purification Plant to inspect the response measures against green algae in the Nakdong River.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, inspected the response system for algal blooms together with Han Hwajin, Minister of Environment, who visited Chilseo Water Purification Plant on the afternoon of the 7th.

Minister Han conducted the on-site inspection due to concerns that the Nakdong River algae warning remains at the ‘caution’ stage.

Minister Han and Mayor Hong received reports from the water purification plant officials on the current status of algae occurrence in the Nakdong River and the response measures for algal blooms at the water intake and purification plants.

The two toured the water purification plant and examined the overall water treatment process.

Minister Han said, “Thank you for your day and night efforts to produce high-quality tap water despite the worsening algal bloom occurrence.”

On this day, Mayor Hong requested national funding support from the Ministry of Environment for the Changwon City emergency interconnection pipeline construction project for tap water.

In response, Minister Han said, “Since tap water is a critical issue directly related to the safety of the people, we will strive to provide national funding support.”

Mayor Hong said, “Chilseo Water Purification Plant, located at the forefront of the Nakdong River algal bloom, is equipped with advanced water treatment facilities, powdered activated carbon injection facilities, and an advanced oxidation process (AOP) that simultaneously injects hydrogen peroxide and ozone. We are strengthening the overall process and water quality inspections to fully respond to algal bloom occurrences, so we hope citizens can safely drink and use the tap water supplied from here.”
