[Asia Economy Reporters Jang Sehee, Song Seungyun] A man in his 20s who wrote a post threatening to carry out a terrorist attack at Seoul Jamsil Stadium has been apprehended by the police.
On the 7th, according to a comprehensive report by Asia Economy, the Goyang Police Station in Gyeonggi Province is investigating a man in his early 20s, identified as Mr. A, on suspicion of posting online that he would carry out a bomb attack at Seoul Jamsil Sports Complex.
The police traced the IP address and confirmed that Mr. A, residing in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, was the author of the post. Considering that Mr. A has an intellectual disability and posed no actual threat, the police reportedly did not take him into custody. It is known that Mr. A was living with his parents at the time of the arrest.
Mr. A is suspected of posting a bomb attack threat targeting Jamsil Sports Complex on the internet that morning. Upon the post being made, a joint response was requested from the fire department at around 10:19 a.m. A netizen who introduced himself as a "Sunni extremist terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) warrior" claimed he would detonate bombs three times at Jamsil Sports Complex during the morning.
The Songpa Police Station, police special forces, and the bomb disposal unit were deployed and began searching from the morning. The fire department, responding to the police request, dispatched 14 vehicles and 58 personnel to evacuate about 1,000 workers preparing for the 'Seoul Festa 2022' at Jamsil Stadium. The police searched various parts of the stadium but confirmed there were no bombs and ended the situation at around 11:13 a.m. The problematic post has since been deleted.
A police official stated, "We plan to investigate the exact circumstances under which the post was made."
