Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Export Over 200,000 Eco-Friendly Vehicles for the First Time in the First Half of This Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] It has been revealed that Hyundai Motor Company and Kia's exports of eco-friendly vehicles exceeded 200,000 units for the first time in the first half of this year. The industry expects that exports could reach 400,000 units this year.


According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA) on the 7th, Hyundai and Kia's exports of eco-friendly vehicles (electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles) from January to June this year totaled 224,672 units, a 30.6% increase compared to the same period last year (171,468 units).


More specifically, Hyundai exported 116,770 units, an increase of 22.1% compared to the first half of last year. Kia exported 107,902 units, up 42.3%.


This is the first time Hyundai Motor Group's eco-friendly vehicle exports in the first half of the year have exceeded 200,000 units. The first quarter (111,202 units) and second quarter (113,470 units) exports both surpassed 100,000 units for the first time. If this trend continues, the annual eco-friendly vehicle exports are expected to exceed 400,000 units this year.


Last year, Hyundai and Kia's eco-friendly vehicle exports reached 373,007 units, a 38.2% increase compared to 2020 (269,874 units), surpassing 300,000 units for the first time.


By vehicle type, electric vehicle exports reached 95,603 units, a 54% increase compared to the first half of last year (60,263 units). Hyundai's exports increased by 56% to 45,375 units, and Kia's exports rose by 52.4% to 50,288 units.


Hybrid vehicle exports totaled 102,938 units, a 12.7% increase compared to the first half of last year (91,377 units). Hyundai's exports increased by 4.4% to 62,130 units, while Kia's exports rose by 28.1% to 40,808 units.


Plug-in hybrid vehicle exports reached 26,131 units, a 45% increase compared to the same period last year (18,028 units). Hyundai exported 9,265 units, up 31.4%, and Kia exported 16,866 units, up 53.6% compared to the first half of last year.
