[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Gun-chan] Jane Fonda (84), a veteran actress in Hollywood, USA, shared her candid thoughts on aging.
On the 2nd (local time), Fonda urged in an interview with fashion magazine Vogue not to fear getting older and especially to resist the temptation of plastic surgery.
She said, "I had undergone two facelift procedures in the past, but I stopped because I disliked how my face looked distorted," adding, "I am not proud of having had surgery." She continued, "Now, I don't do much to my face. I don't spend a lot of money on expensive face creams. Instead, I sleep, move around, get sunlight, and meet friends who make me laugh."
Fonda pointed out that many women are addicted to plastic surgery and advised that having a mindset that is not obsessed with aging is important.
She said, "Many wealthy women undergo various wrinkle removal procedures, but they look terrible." She added, "What matters is health, not age," and said, "Just because you reach a certain age doesn't mean you have to give up on life, fun, or having a boyfriend or girlfriend." She emphasized, "Even as you get older, life is still a 'kingdom full of possibilities.'"
Vogue evaluated Fonda as a "living witness" to her past statement, "You can be old at 65 or stay young even at 85."
Fonda is an actress honored with two Academy Awards and seven Golden Globe Awards. She participated in anti-Vietnam War protests in the 1970s and has actively joined political protests such as those against the Iraq War in the 2000s. She announced the Best Picture award for director Bong Joon-ho's film Parasite at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020.
