Diplomatic and Economic Channels Are Not Targets for Severance
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] China has severed numerous existing dialogue and cooperation channels between the U.S. and China as retaliation for Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, visiting Taiwan.
On the 5th, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced eight measures, stating, "We declare sanction measures in response to Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, who ignored China's strong opposition and stern protests and forcibly proceeded with her visit to Taiwan."
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the cancellation of a phone call between theater commanders of the two countries, a working-level meeting of the Ministry of National Defense, and a maritime military security consultation meeting. Additionally, cooperation on illegal immigrant repatriation, criminal justice cooperation, multinational crime suppression cooperation, drug control cooperation, and climate change negotiations between the U.S. and China will be temporarily suspended.
China also decided on sanctions against Speaker Pelosi and her immediate family members that day. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "She stubbornly visited Taiwan, seriously interfering in China's internal affairs and severely damaging China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," and "She severely trampled on the One-China principle and seriously threatened peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait." The details of the sanctions were not disclosed, but based on precedent, they are expected to include restrictions on entry to China, freezing of assets within China, and bans on transactions with Chinese companies and individuals.
Earlier, while on an Asia tour, Speaker Pelosi made a sudden visit to Taiwan on the 2nd and 3rd, the first by a U.S. House Speaker in 25 years. In response, China launched 11 ballistic missiles into waters surrounding Taiwan the previous day and conducted an unprecedented level of military demonstrations, including firing large numbers of long-range artillery in the eastern Taiwan Strait. The U.S. also deployed an aircraft carrier strike group near Taiwan waters, heightening tensions between the two countries.
