[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] As COVID-19 resurges, more than 100,000 new confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 9 p.m. on the 4th.
According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on this day, 108,390 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is 3,900 more than the previous day's count (104,490). For the third consecutive day, the number exceeded 100,000 during the same time frame.
In this interim tally, the number of new confirmed cases is 1.30 times the count at the same time one week ago on the 28th of last month (83,140), and 1.63 times the count two weeks ago on the 21st of last month (66,491).
The quarantine authorities had projected the peak daily new confirmed cases during the COVID-19 resurgence to be between 250,000 and 300,000, but in today's briefing, they lowered the estimate to about 150,000. Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases to be announced on the 5th is expected to increase further to around 110,000.
As of 9 p.m. on this day, new confirmed cases were 53,018 (48.91%) in the metropolitan area and 55,372 (51.09%) in non-metropolitan areas.
By region, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 29,264, Seoul 20,817, Gyeongnam 6,386, Incheon 5,877, Gyeongbuk 5,783, Chungnam 4,601, Daegu 4,454, Jeonbuk 4,117, Gangwon 4,013, Jeonnam 3,887, Chungbuk 3,752, Daejeon 3,626, Gwangju 3,380, Ulsan 2,937, Busan 2,928, Jeju 1,695, and Sejong 873.
Over the past week from the 29th, the daily new confirmed cases were 85,298 → 81,984 → 73,562 → 44,659 → 111,770 → 119,922 → 107,894. The daily average is 89,298.
