Doosan Enerbility to Build 840 Billion KRW Seawater Desalination Plant in Saudi Arabia

Producing 600,000 Tons of Water Daily with Reverse Osmosis Technology

Doosan Enerbility to Build 840 Billion KRW Seawater Desalination Plant in Saudi Arabia Doosan Enerbility announced on the 3rd that it has signed a construction contract for the 'Shuaiba Phase 3' seawater desalination plant with a special purpose company established by the Saudi Arabian developer 'Arka Power'.

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] Doosan Enerbility will construct a seawater desalination plant worth 840 billion KRW in Saudi Arabia.

Doosan Enerbility announced on the 3rd that it signed a contract to build the 'Shuaiba Phase 3' seawater desalination plant with a special purpose company established by 'Arka Power,' a developer in Saudi Arabia.

Arka Power is the largest private power generation and desalination company in the Middle East region and previously carried out seawater desalination projects with Doosan Enerbility in 2006 and 2007.

The Shuaiba Phase 3 project involves constructing a reverse osmosis seawater desalination plant approximately 110 km south of Jeddah. Reverse osmosis desalination is a technology similar to the principle of a water purifier, where seawater is pressurized artificially and passed through a semipermeable membrane to remove salt.

Doosan Enerbility will undertake the entire process from design to equipment manufacturing, installation, and commissioning, with completion planned for May 2025. Upon completion, the plant will produce 600,000 tons of water daily, sufficient for about 2 million people. To reduce electricity consumption during freshwater production, a 60MW solar power plant will also be constructed.

A Doosan Enerbility official stated, "Following last year's 780 billion KRW contract for the Yanbu Phase 4 seawater desalination plant, we have secured another large-scale project, solidifying our position as a global leader in seawater desalination. Since 1 to 3 seawater desalination plants are ordered annually in Saudi Arabia, we will actively target the market with our proven technology."
