[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Yunina and Ogu (Wrong ball)"

[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Yunina and Ogu (Wrong ball)" Yoo Yina apologized for the Ogu play and then withdrew from the tournament.

Golf is a gentleman's sport. There is no referee, and you are your own judge.

During tournaments, there is a marker, but their oversight is limited. The worst thing in golf is ‘cheating’ others. When golf started in Scotland, there was a rule to always keep in mind: "Be careful not to play a wrong ball." Yoon Ina (19) played with a wrong ball on the 15th hole of the first round of the Korea Women's Open last June and voluntarily reported it one month later, which is also considered cheating.

Rule 15-1 of golf states that ‘a player must hole out with the ball he hits off the tee.’ Exceptions include lost balls, out of bounds (OB), and substituted balls (Under Rule 15-1 of the standard Rules of Golf, a player must hole out with the ball he hits off the tee, except when the ball is lost, hit out of bounds or substituted). If a wrong ball is played, the player must declare the mistake before the next shot. Failure to correct it before leaving the putting green results in disqualification.

In stroke play, playing a wrong ball incurs a two-stroke penalty (In stroke play, when a competitor plays wrong ball he immediately has to take a two-stroke penalty). The United States Golf Association (USGA) and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A), which govern golf rules worldwide, impose a lifetime ban for hiding or cheating after a rule violation. All golfers should be vigilant about playing the correct ball. They must be certain of their ball during play and adhere to this.

A: Be careful not to play a wrong ball!

B: What is the penalty for hitting a wrong ball?

A: It is two strokes, and the correction must be made before the player tees off on the next hole.

B: Why do pro golfers cheat?

A: One possible reason is that golfers have built up a reputation for how great they are at golf. Professional golf is no different. Written by Kim Maengnyeong, Golf Columnist
