LG Electronics Wins Industry-Highest 17 'Green Product Awards'
Samsung Electronics Selected for 11 Products Including Neo QLED 8K TV
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The flagship products of Samsung and LG, the two giants of Korean home appliances, are consecutively receiving recognition for their eco-friendly and high-efficiency technologies. Eco-friendly management is being applied throughout all product life cycles?from manufacturing, distribution, and use to disposal?and the scope of 'Green Product' awards is expanding beyond home appliances to include medical devices.
According to the industry on the 2nd, LG Electronics had 17 products and Samsung Electronics had 11 products selected in the '2022 Korea Green Product of the Year' hosted by the nonprofit civic organization Korea Green Purchasing Network. Both companies were recognized for realizing their management policies that present new 'customer experiences' across quality, service, and environmental aspects.
Specifically, LG Electronics became the company with the most awards, with 17 products selected as green products, including the Dios Objet Collection top-freezer bottom-freezer refrigerator, the only home appliance to receive the 'Consumer Popularity Award,' and the Whisen Objet Collection Edge. LG also achieved the longest consecutive award-winning streak from 2010 to this year.
For Samsung Electronics, it received an award in the medical device category for the first time among green product awardees. The protagonist is the ultrasound imaging diagnostic system 'V7.' In addition, flagship products such as the 'Neo QLED 8K TV' were selected as excellent products.
Both companies emphasized the significance of being recognized for creating excellent products by applying eco-friendly technologies across various product lines. A common point was the high evaluation of the performance of 'inverter technology' applied to core components such as motors and compressors. Inverter technology controls the operation of products by converting the movement speed of motors and compressors to operate only as much as needed depending on the situation. Examples include Samsung Electronics' Bespoke 4-door refrigerator, which has earned the highest energy efficiency grade, and LG Tromm Objet Collection dryers.
It is also noteworthy that eco-friendly innovation has been implemented not only in home appliances but also in the medical device sector. Samsung Electronics' V7 is the first medical device to receive a green product award in the history of the Green Product Awards. The ultrasound imaging diagnostic system is a heavy, multi-joint product weighing around 100kg, and typically uses foam plastic cushioning materials during distribution. Samsung Electronics' V7, however, improved environmental friendliness by changing and applying cushioning materials made of paper and wood. Recycled plastic was applied to the bottom of the product, and the product manual was changed from paper to an electronic manual.
Last month, both companies also had many of their flagship products listed in the recipients of the 'Energy Winner of the Year' award, which is given to products with excellent energy-saving and high-efficiency performance. They plan to continue adhering to eco-friendly management and further accelerate the development of high-efficiency energy control functions and high-quality components.
Ryu Jaecheol, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics H&A (Home Appliance) Business Division, said, "We will provide differentiated customer experiences by leading with high-efficiency home appliances that apply LG's uniquely accumulated energy technologies over a long period." Kim Hyungnam, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics Global CS (Customer Satisfaction) Center, said, "Samsung Electronics reviews and improves environmental aspects such as energy efficiency, resource circulation, and hazard reduction from the product design stage. We will continue to strive to improve not only quality and service but also environmental friendliness and provide innovative products."
