Promoting Exchange with Pittsburgh City, Similar in Development from "Seasonal Industry to New Industry"

Pohang Mayor Lee Gang-deok Discusses Promoting Mutual Exchange with Head of Pennsylvania State Government Korea Office Pohang City Hall.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] On the 1st, Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang City discussed the promotion of exchanges between Pohang City and Pittsburgh City, Pennsylvania, with Yang Geun-seok, head of the Pennsylvania State Government Korea Office, who visited City Hall.


During the meeting, Mayor Lee Kang-deok introduced key priority projects being promoted by the city, such as secondary batteries, bio, hydrogen, and attracting research-oriented medical schools, and said, “Pittsburgh City in Pennsylvania and Pohang City have considerable similarities in many aspects such as urban growth processes, major industries, and startup ecosystem development. Therefore, if the two cities engage in mutual exchange and cooperation, we expect great synergy effects.”


In response, Yang Geun-seok, head of the Pennsylvania State Government Korea Office, said, “Like Pittsburgh City, Pohang is also transforming from a steel city to a future new growth industry hub,” and promised active cooperation and support, stating, “Since many startups are born every year, if we exchange with Pittsburgh City, a cradle of future advanced technology, successful mutual cooperation in various fields will be possible.”


After the meeting, Director Yang toured Pohang’s new hot spots, ‘Space Walk’ and ‘Sky Walk,’ enjoyed the beautiful night view of Yeongildae Beach, and decided to convey Pohang City’s strong passion and beauty for urban innovation to Pittsburgh City.


The Pennsylvania State Government Korea Office was established in Seoul in 1998 and performs tasks related to mutual human exchange, investment attraction, and trade promotion between Korea and Pennsylvania’s companies and organizations. Currently, Yang Geun-seok, head of the Pennsylvania State Government Korea Office, also serves as a director of the Association of State Government Representatives in the United States (ASOK).
