Yang Huiyan, Asia's Top Female Billionaire for Years, Drops to 3rd Place
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] Savitri Jindal, the wife of the founder of India's steel and energy company Jindal Group, has become the richest woman in Asia.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index on the 31st (local time), Jindal's fortune is estimated at $11.3 billion (approximately 14.7 trillion KRW), making her the wealthiest woman in Asia. She is followed by Pan Hongwei, chairman of Hengli Petrochemical in China.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index values both their fortunes at $11.3 billion, but ranks Jindal one step higher than Chairman Pan. Jindal's wealth appears to exceed Pan Hongwei's by several million dollars.
After her husband O.P. Jindal, the founder of Jindal Group, died in a helicopter crash in 2005, Jindal participated in managing the group and expanded the company's scale. Jindal Group operates in steel, power, mining, oil, and gas sectors, with Jindal's four sons managing each field separately.
Yang Huiyan, who had held the title of Asia's richest woman for several years, dropped to third place with a fortune of $11 billion (approximately 14.4 trillion KRW).
Yang Huiyan, the major shareholder of China's real estate company Country Garden, saw her wealth fall to less than half compared to $23.7 billion (approximately 31 trillion KRW) in January, due to regulatory crackdowns and a real estate market downturn causing a sharp decline in Country Garden's stock price.
Yang Huiyan is the second daughter of Country Garden founder Yang Guochang and inherited more than half of the shares of Country Garden Holdings from her father.
