[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Se-eun] American pop star Taylor Swift (32) has earned the dubious distinction of being the star who emitted the most carbon dioxide (CO2) this year.
On the 30th (local time), according to foreign media including Rolling Stones, the UK digital marketing company Yard announced on the 25th that famous celebrities worldwide emitted an average of 3,376.64 tons of carbon through private jets this year.
Among them, the star who emitted the most carbon was Taylor Swift. Swift emitted 8,293 tons of carbon this year alone. This is 1,184 times the total amount of carbon dioxide emitted by an average person in one year, which is 7 tons. She flew a total of 170 flights, totaling 22,923 minutes (about 380 hours), with an average flight time of 80 minutes per flight and an average flight distance of 224 km.
The fact that she is currently not on a tour has put her under scrutiny. Swift used private jets to date her boyfriend in the UK and even sent an empty private jet to bring her boyfriend over. After the list was made public, it was revealed that she flew private jets two more times, which intensified the criticism.
In response, Swift’s side explained, "Swift regularly rents out her plane to others," and said, "It is wrong to attribute all carbon emissions related to the private jet to Swift."
Previously, in a 2020 interview with Variety in the US, Swift expressed concerns about climate change. Foreign media reported that fans are greatly disappointed by the discrepancy between her words and actions.
Meanwhile, according to Yard, besides Swift, the top 10 celebrities who emitted the most carbon include boxer Floyd Mayweather (7,076.8 tons), rapper Jay-Z (6,981.3 tons), former basketball player A-Rod (5,342.7 tons), musician Blake Shelton (4,495 tons), film director Steven Spielberg (4,465 tons), model Kim Kardashian (4,268.5 tons), actor Mark Wahlberg (3,772.85 tons), TV host Oprah Winfrey (3,493.17 tons), and rapper Travis Scott (3,033.3 tons).
