Fatal Accident at Bukpyeong Factory on 20th of This Month... 3 Sites Raided
Ministry of Employment: "Basic Safety Measures Not Implemented... Will Take Strict Action"
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Junhyung] Labor authorities have launched a search and seizure operation at the headquarters of Ssangyong C&E, which was involved in a subcontractor worker's fatal accident.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that the Gangwon branch has been conducting a search and seizure at three locations?the Ssangyong C&E headquarters, Bukpyeong factory, and subcontractor office?since 9:30 a.m. on the 29th. This search and seizure is a follow-up measure in response to the recent fatal accident at Ssangyong C&E's Bukpyeong factory located in Donghae, Gangwon.
At Ssangyong C&E's Bukpyeong factory, on the 20th of this month, a worker in his 60s belonging to a partner company died after being buried under a collapsed pile of coal ash during coal ash unloading work. Earlier, at Ssangyong C&E's Donghae factory, on February 21, a worker in his 50s from a partner company died after falling during steel frame installation work. This means that two serious accidents have occurred consecutively at Ssangyong C&E this year.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor believes that Ssangyong C&E did not properly establish a safety management system. A ministry official stated, "We believe that both fatal accidents at Ssangyong C&E this year occurred due to failure to implement basic safety measures," adding, "We will thoroughly verify the structural problems of the safety and health management system established by Ssangyong C&E during this search and seizure and take strict action."
