Japan's new COVID-19 cases have approached 200,000.


According to the local public broadcaster NHK's tally, as of 6 p.m. on the 26th, the number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across Japan was 196,494.


After surpassing 200,000 for the first time with 200,930 cases on the 23rd, the number decreased to 126,550 on the 25th but rose again to nearly 200,000 on this day.


The average daily new cases over the past week (19th?25th) were 157,783, a 66% increase compared to the previous week (94,846).


The number of COVID-19 deaths on this day was 115, the highest in four months since March 25th (115 deaths).


During the peak of Japan's sixth wave, the maximum number of deaths was 322 (on February 22nd).


The Japanese government has not yet implemented behavioral restrictions such as limiting restaurant operating hours in response to the spread of COVID-19.
