Assemblyman So Byeong-cheol Confirmed for the National Assembly's Second Half 'Political Affairs Committee'

[Suncheon=Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Democratic Party lawmaker So Byung-chul (Suncheon·Gwangyang·Gokseong·Gurye (Gap)) announced on the 25th that his standing committee for the second half of the National Assembly was confirmed as the ‘Political Affairs Committee,’ and he will also concurrently serve on the ‘Intelligence Committee.’

The Political Affairs Committee is a key standing committee of the National Assembly overseeing a total of 23 affiliated agencies, including the Office for Government Policy Coordination assisting the Prime Minister, the Financial Services Commission responsible for overall financial policy, the Fair Trade Commission supervising competition order, and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs handling national patriotism and veterans affairs.

The main reason lawmaker So Byung-chul wished to join the Political Affairs Committee is known to stem from his strong determination to take full responsibility for the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and his goal to seek revitalization of the Suncheon economy.

According to the ‘Special Act on the Investigation of the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident and the Restoration of Honor for the Victims’ (hereinafter ‘Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Special Act’), the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Committee is established under the Prime Minister’s Office. Therefore, it is interpreted that he intends to continuously supervise the committee’s work through the Office for Government Policy Coordination and the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, which are agencies under the Political Affairs Committee’s jurisdiction.

Furthermore, since the Political Affairs Committee oversees the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, it is also evaluated that it can play a role in improving the rights and interests of numerous patriotic families in the Suncheon region.

In addition, through the Financial Services Commission, the Financial Supervisory Service, and the Fair Trade Commission, there is also the intention to carefully consider and discover various measures that could become new economic driving forces for Suncheon.

Lawmaker So Byung-chul stated, “Amid the recent crisis of high inflation, high interest rates, and high exchange rates affecting people’s livelihoods and the economy, we will establish proper financial policies and fair trade to revitalize the economy and set the competition order straight.” He added, “While pointing out the wrong policies of institutions with alternatives, we will cooperate for the economic development of the Suncheon region and continue to deliberate on reasonable measures together.”

He continued, “Only when the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Committee under the Prime Minister’s Office faithfully performs its functions can the investigation of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and the restoration of honor for the victims be completed.” He emphasized, “I will thoroughly supervise and audit the committee’s work and fulfill the mission for the complete resolution of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident.”

During the first half of the National Assembly, lawmaker So was the only member from Honam to serve on the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, through which the ‘Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Special Act’ and the ‘Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo Act’ were passed unanimously.

He was also recognized for playing a decisive role in passing the ‘Korea Electric Power University Act’ and the ‘Rural Love Donation Act,’ which were essential for Jeonnam’s development but faced difficulties due to opposition from the then-opposition party.

Lawmaker So Byung-chul stated that he will devote all his efforts to ensuring the success of Suncheon’s long-standing pending projects in the second half of the National Assembly.

In particular, he is determined to attract the long-awaited medical school in Jeonnam (Eastern region) after 30 years, successfully host the 2023 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo currently in preparation, and steadily advance the historic task of investigating the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and restoring honor.

Regarding his concurrent role on the Intelligence Committee, lawmaker So said, “I will approach recent national issues that have attracted public attention with a responsible attitude prioritizing national interest and security rather than partisan positions.” He emphasized, “In my activities in the standing committees for the second half, I will focus solely on the people and devote all my efforts to becoming a lawmaker whom the citizens of Suncheon can be proud of.”
