[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] Philip Goldberg, the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Korea, held his first meeting with major Korean business leaders.
On the 25th, the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) announced that it held a 'Business Luncheon Meeting with Philip Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to Korea' at its conference center. This meeting was organized to welcome Philip Goldberg’s appointment and to facilitate introductions with the Korean business community. Attended by Ambassador Goldberg and CEOs of leading Korean companies investing in the U.S., the meeting covered a variety of topics ranging from recent issues such as the U.S.-led multilateral economic cooperation framework 'Indo-Pacific Economic Framework' (IPEF) and supply chains to expanding bilateral economic cooperation.
Huh Chang-soo, Chairman of the FKI, welcomed Ambassador Goldberg’s appointment, saying in his opening remarks, “Thank you for visiting to meet with business leaders shortly after your arrival in Korea.” He added, “The Korea-U.S. relationship, which has expanded from a strong Korea-U.S. alliance to an economic alliance through the Korea-U.S. FTA, is now advancing to a new level as a global alliance.” He emphasized, “As Korean companies’ investments in the U.S. have significantly increased, our companies, already active as corporate citizens in the U.S., are the best partners for prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. We will strive to realize stable global supply chains and the economic agenda of the upcoming Korea-U.S. summit in May.”
The luncheon was attended by key figures including Kim Hee-yong, Chairman of TYM; Song Yong-duk, Vice Chairman of Lotte; Geum Chun-su, Vice Chairman of Hanwha; Park Jun, Vice Chairman of Nongshim; Choi Chang-sik, Vice Chairman of DB HiTek; Park Woo-dong, President of Poongsan; and Eom Tae-woong, President of Samyang, as well as representatives from major U.S.-invested companies such as Samsung, POSCO, and Coupang.
Meanwhile, the FKI, as a representative channel for the Korean business community to the U.S., operates the Korea-U.S. Business Council annually with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This year, the 34th Korea-U.S. Business Council General Assembly is scheduled to be held in Seoul on October 19 and 20.
