Gurye-gun and Sancheong-gun Join Hands for Jirisan Cable Car Installation

Efforts Must Be Made Together to Install Cable Cars to Overcome Regional Disappearance

[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] Kim Sun-ho, the governor of Gurye County, Jeonnam, announced on the 18th that he met with Lee Seung-hwa, the governor of Sancheong County, Gyeongnam, and agreed to join forces to install a cable car in Jirisan.

In June, the Ministry of Environment rejected the Jirisan cable car project in Gurye County, which was applied for solely by Gurye County, citing unsuitability in terms of public interest, environmental impact, and technical feasibility.

As a countermeasure, Governor Kim Sun-ho, who met with Governor Lee Seung-hwa of Sancheong County to discuss cooperation plans for the Jirisan area, said, "The Ministry of Environment's demand since 2012 for an agreement among the four cities and counties in the Jirisan area on one route is practically impossible to realize," and proposed, "For balanced national development, the four cities and counties in the Jirisan area should actively cooperate and jointly propose the optimal plan for installing the cable car to the Ministry of Environment."

Governor Lee Seung-hwa of Sancheong County responded, "Let's work together to install the cable car in Jirisan."

Taking the first step toward coexistence in the Jirisan area for the installation of the Jirisan cable car, Governors Kim Sun-ho of Gurye County and Lee Seung-hwa of Sancheong County decided to continue discussions with Namwon City and Hamyang County to protect the national park environment, resolve the long-standing wishes of local residents, and overcome local extinction by jointly working on the installation of the Jirisan cable car.
