Gwanak-gu Opens Byeolbitnaerimcheon Until August 31, Installing Water Lot, Palm Bucket, Giraffe Bench and Other Water Play Facilities
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Seok Gang-seok) will operate the ‘Seongnaecheon Waterpark Small Library’ at the Seongnaecheon Water Playground for three days from the 22nd to the 24th.
The district reopened the Seongnaecheon Water Playground, which had been closed since July 1 due to COVID-19 social distancing measures, after three years. Since its opening in 2004, this place has been a beloved urban summer retreat for residents, attracting 200,000 visitors annually.
In particular, through the small library, various experiential programs such as reading books on the water or crafting activities are offered. The Saemaeul Library Songpa-gu branch hosts and organizes the event, with members and executives volunteering together.
The detailed programs include ▲book and tube rental ▲environmental literacy programs ▲board games ▲initial bracelet making ▲photo zones, among others.
In the book space, visitors can borrow about 2,000 books including creative fairy tales, culture, and essays. The rental is free, and up to two books can be borrowed at a time. Rental hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The environmental literacy program is also noteworthy. Participants read recommended books on environmental topics and engage in post-reading activities such as recycling education and fan decoration, encouraging reflection on environmental issues.
Seok Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “The ‘Seongnaecheon Waterpark Small Library’ is a unique reading space where you can enjoy water play and read books at the same time,” adding, “We hope visitors come to Seongnaecheon this weekend with the spirit of a trip and have a cool and enjoyable time with books.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Seongnaecheon Water Playground’ stretches 160 meters in total length and is created with subway spring water at depths ranging from 30 to 80 cm. It is equipped with convenience facilities such as changing rooms, showers, and restrooms, and operates daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is free for people of all ages to use until August 31.
The intense heatwave with temperatures exceeding 30℃ continues day after day. Urban resorts near home where children can enjoy without going far are gaining popularity.
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) reopened the Byeolbitnaerincheon Children’s Water Playground after three years since it closed in 2020 due to the spread of COVID-19.
The Byeolbitnaerincheon Children’s Water Playground is a water play theme park in the city featuring facilities such as water rot, palm tree buckets, and giraffe benches, allowing visitors to enjoy cool water streams in the city during the hot summer without traveling far.
The water playground is free to use until August 31 for preschool children and those under 9 years old. It is equipped with convenience facilities such as changing rooms, shade tents, and thermometers, ready to welcome young guests.
Particularly, considering water quality and safety, the playground undergoes tank cleaning twice daily and replaces tap water before opening, with safety personnel deployed to ensure cleanliness and safety management.
The Byeolbitnaerincheon Water Playground is a popular local attraction frequently visited by residents every year. This year, accessibility has improved further with the opening of the Sillim Light Rail Transit.
Operating hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., subject to change depending on weather conditions at different stages.
For more convenient use, visitors can check the opening status on the day by contacting the Gwanak-gu Facilities Management Corporation or the Gwanak-gu Water Management Division.
Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “After a long wait due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, I hope children and families can relieve the heat and have a healing time for body and mind,” adding, “Since this is the first summer vacation without social distancing, it is important to follow quarantine rules such as wearing masks and maintaining personal distance. Our district will do its best to ensure that all visitors to Byeolbitnaerincheon can use the facilities safely and comfortably.”
