Hanwha Systems Targets UK Market This Time

[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] Hanwha Systems is participating in the UK Farnborough Airshow to pioneer market channels in the global UAM (Urban Air Mobility), aerospace, and advanced defense markets.

From the 18th to the 22nd, a large booth of 230㎡ (about 70 pyeong) will be set up at the Farnborough Airshow 2022 held in Hampshire County near London, UK.

Hanwha Systems will showcase its ultra-connected, ultra-intelligent, and ultra-convergent technologies and business capabilities connecting ground, air, and space through two zones within the booth: UAM and Defense.

The Farnborough Airshow, the world's largest aviation and defense exhibition, is considered one of the "world's top three airshows" along with the Paris and Singapore Airshows, and is held every even-numbered July. This year, 1,500 global companies and organizations from home and abroad are participating, with more than 80,000 visitors expected.

In the UAM zone, Hanwha Systems will unveil for the first time a full-scale rotor mockup (life-size model) of the 'Butterfly' aircraft, co-developed with the US company Overair. The rotor, equipped with three blades (propellers), has a diameter of 6 meters and a height of 6 meters.

Hanwha Systems will demonstrate how the motor inside the rotor operates as an 'electric propulsion system' at the booth. They will also introduce the patented 'OSTR (Optimal Speed Tilt Rotor)' technology, which realizes safety, efficiency, speed, low noise, and eco-friendliness of the Butterfly aircraft, along with the active vibration control technology (IBC) that enhances safety through individual blade control.

Hanwha Systems explained that the Butterfly places four tilt rotors (vertical takeoff and landing propeller operation system) on the front and rear wings using OSTR and IBC technologies, allowing safe flight even if one rotor fails. Hanwha Systems and Overair are preparing to produce a full-scale unmanned prototype in the first half of 2023.

In the Defense zone, advanced defense products will be exhibited, including ▲ultra-small satellites reduced in size with a thin rectangular shape maximizing cost-effectiveness ▲electronically scanned antennas for low-earth orbit satellite communications enabling stable 'space internet' networks ▲AESA radar technology for the Korean fighter jet (KF-21) ▲air defense systems such as the Cheongung-II multifunction radar (MFR) and long-range surface-to-air guided weapon system MFR ▲and aircraft survivability equipment DIRCM (Directional Infrared Countermeasure).

Seong-cheol Uh, CEO of Hanwha Systems, stated, "Based on our unique defense, communication, and radar technologies, Hanwha Systems is rapidly entering the UAM and low-earth orbit satellite communication fields, transforming into a 'global hyperspace network' company." He added, "Through the Farnborough Airshow, we will promote our technological competitiveness to the global market, leading innovation in the aerospace industry and changes in the future mobility paradigm."
