Speed Limit Adjusted from 30km/h to 40km/h at 21 Locations
Citizens Continue to Raise Complaints Over Uniform Speed Regulations
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The Gangwon Provincial Police Agency announced on the 15th that "due to continuous complaints from citizens regarding the uniform speed regulations in school zones, the speed limit will be raised from 30km/h to 40km/h in a total of 21 locations where the risk of accidents is low or the frequency of children commuting is low."
According to the Gangwon Police Agency, the selection criteria prioritized 21 locations, including 7 major arterial roads where the speed limit sharply drops from 60km/h to 30km/h, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions, and 9 locations with low pedestrian commuting frequency and low pedestrian accident risk.
The sections where the speed limit is raised will undergo reinforcement of traffic safety facilities such as pedestrian safety fences, central dividers, and road surface painting to improve visibility, followed by review by the police station’s Traffic Safety Deliberation Committee and approval by the provincial police agency.
In addition to school zones, the Gangwon Police Agency plans to identify sections within the Safe Speed 5030 zones where excessively low speed limits cause traffic inconvenience and raise speed limits to improve citizen convenience.
A Gangwon Police Agency official stated, "Even though the speed limits are raised, safety remains paramount. We will continue to improve traffic safety facilities accordingly and ask citizens to maintain a mature awareness of traffic safety."
