Excavated Artifacts Neglected in University Museum Storage See the Light

Cultural Heritage Administration to Hold Exhibitions Divided into Chungcheong, Central, and Yeongnam Regions

University museums will simultaneously unveil artifacts excavated long ago but not yet fully cataloged.

On the 15th, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that artifacts excavated and stored by university museums before the 2000s will be exhibited by region: Chungcheong, Central, and Yeongnam areas. This is part of a project to preserve and utilize uncataloged buried cultural assets. From 2020 to 2025, the Cultural Heritage Administration is investing 15.8 billion KRW to organize these artifacts and publish reports. A representative from the Cultural Heritage Administration stated, "Thirty university museums are participating," and "approximately 90,000 uncataloged artifacts are expected to be transferred to the state."

The exhibitions will begin on the 15th at the Chungnam National University Museum, followed by the Yeungnam University Museum and Dankook University Seokjuseon Memorial Museum in September. At the Chungnam National University Museum, the academic value of the Boryeong Jinjuk-ri site, a kiln site from the Unified Silla period, will be explored. About 151 items, including pleated-patterned bottles, pressed bottles, and flat-bottomed bottles, will be introduced. The Yeungnam University Museum will showcase burial artifacts from the Gyeongsan Imdang-dong tumulus cluster excavated in 1982, illustrating the burial customs of Apdokguk (押督國), a local small state of Silla, including the burial of royal or noble personal items and vessels. The Dankook University Seokjuseon Memorial Museum will highlight the significance of the Hwaseong Gupori site (Choi Sook's tomb) and the value of the excavated clothing artifacts.
