Seoul City Wins Korea Environmental Award for Electric Vehicle Charger Policy

Representative Environmental Award Officially Sponsored by the Government Since 2005... City Electric Vehicle Charger Policy Highly Rated

Seoul City Wins Korea Environmental Award for Electric Vehicle Charger Policy

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 15th that it won the Grand Prize in the public sector for ‘Eco-friendly Vehicle Infrastructure’ at the 17th ‘2022 Korea Environmental Awards.’ The Korea Environmental Awards have been presented annually since 2005 to companies, public organizations, local governments, groups, and individuals who have made significant contributions to sustainable social development, and it is a representative environmental award officially sponsored by the government of Korea.

In January, Seoul City announced through the ‘Seoul Climate Change Response Comprehensive Plan (2022-2026)’ that it will proactively distribute 220,000 chargers and 400,000 electric vehicles by 2026 to achieve carbon neutrality in the transportation sector, which accounts for 19.2% of greenhouse gas emissions, aiming to advance the era of 10% electric vehicles.

Starting from the first half of this year, citizens have been able to directly apply for locations to install electric vehicle chargers. The plan is to install chargers at locations desired by citizens to increase their sense of impact, and also to install them in high-altitude areas and old apartments to eliminate charging blind spots. Approximately 10,000 applications were received in the first half alone, exceeding the initial target, and priority was given to applications from vulnerable groups such as low-income households and people with disabilities to facilitate charging convenience.

Yoo Yeon-sik, Head of Seoul City’s Climate and Environment Headquarters, said, “We are honored that Seoul City’s charger infrastructure distribution policy has been recognized by winning the main prize in the ‘Eco-friendly Infrastructure’ category at the Korea Environmental Awards,” and added, “We will continue to install charging facilities in appropriate locations so that citizens can use them conveniently.”
