Netflix's 'Ojingeo Geim' (Squid Game) has become the first non-English drama to be nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmy Awards, the most prestigious ceremony in the American television industry.

The Television Academy (ATAS), which oversees the Emmys, announced the nominees for the 74th Emmy Awards on the 12th (local time). 'Ojingeo Geim' received fourteen nominations across thirteen categories, including Outstanding Drama Series, Directing (Hwang Dong-hyuk), Lead Actor (Lee Jung-jae), Supporting Actor (Oh Young-soo, Park Hae-soo), Supporting Actress (Jung Ho-yeon), Writing (Hwang Dong-hyuk), and Outstanding Guest Actress (Lee Yoo-mi). This is the highest number of nominations ever received by a foreign-language drama. It also broke the barrier that previously limited eligibility for the Outstanding Drama Series award to English-language productions.

'Ojingeo Geim' competes for Outstanding Drama Series against seven other shows: 'Succession,' 'Stranger Things,' 'Better Call Saul,' 'Euphoria,' 'Ozark,' 'Severance,' and 'Yellowjackets.' Lee Jung-jae was nominated for Lead Actor, competing against Jason Bateman from 'Ozark,' Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong from 'Succession,' Bob Odenkirk from 'Better Call Saul,' and Adam Scott from 'Severance.' Oh Young-soo and Park Hae-soo were both nominated for Supporting Actor, and Jung Ho-yeon was nominated for Supporting Actress. Director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk was nominated for both Directing and Writing, and Lee Yoo-mi was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress. Additionally, 'Ojingeo Geim' received nominations for Cinematography (Lee Hyung-deok), Main Title Music (Jung Jae-il), Production Design (Chae Kyung-sun), Editing (Nam Na-young), Visual Effects (Jung Jae-hoon), and Stunt Performance (Lim Tae-hoon).

The actors have a strong chance of winning. They have been recognized for their performances by winning trophies at major awards such as the Golden Globes (Oh Young-soo), Screen Actors Guild Awards (Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon), and Critics' Choice Awards (Lee Jung-jae), which are considered barometers for predicting Emmy wins. They also enjoy high recognition and popularity. 'Ojingeo Geim' was the most-watched show on Netflix last year, surpassing 'La Casa de Papel' (Money Heist), 'Bridgerton,' and 'Stranger Things.' It set records for the most viewing hours and the highest number of viewing households in Netflix TV history. Netflix has recently launched an extensive advertising campaign centered in Hollywood, further boosting its chances of winning.

Local media cite HBO's 'Succession' as the biggest competitor. The drama, which depicts the power struggles and conflicts within a media conglomerate family over inheritance, swept the 2020 Emmys with wins for Outstanding Drama Series, Directing (Andrij Parekh), Lead Actor (Jeremy Strong), and Writing (Jesse Armstrong). At the Golden Globes in January, where it faced off against 'Ojingeo Geim,' it won Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor (Jeremy Strong), and Supporting Actress (Sarah Snook). The results of the rematch will be revealed at the ceremony broadcast on NBC on September 12.
